Wildcat Was Worth the Wait

I once grabbed a paperback called 3 by Flannery O’Connor to occupy the hours on a road trip from Colorado to Missouri.

My husband was at the wheel and our two sons, armed with snacks and action figures, were belted in the back seat. At the time, I was finishing my English degree at the local college and writers I already loved were quoting O’Connor with such delight that I had to get to know the woman whose name seemed always connected to words like Southern, Gothic, Catholic, Hilarious and Grotesque.

Wise Blood gripped me like an accident you can’t stop staring at no matter how much you want to look away (“the writer should never be ashamed of staring,” O’Connor once said about her craft). Her characters were bizarre and shocking and yet so very real. Hazel Motes, the tormented prophet of the Church without Christ, needled my easy-answer faith. Whether I liked it or not, I had to keep reading while “Haze” worked out his anger and a ragged figure in the back of his mind mind leapt from tree to tree.

Flannery O’Connor knocked me off balance. What was going on here?

“Jesus thrown everything off balance,” the Misfit growls just before shoots the Grandmother in “A Good Man Is Hard to Find.” In the last moment of her life, that uppity “lady” recognized the humanity she shared with her killer. “Why, you’re one of my own children!” she gasps.

Christ was the ragged figure in the back of Haze’s mind (and mine) all along, throwing me off balance as I read with bare feet propped on the dash of a brown Chevette. I could not stop staring.

“I suppose the reasons for the use of so much violence in modern fiction will differ with each writer who uses it,” O’Connor comments in Mystery and Manners:

But in my own stories I have found that violence is strangely capable of returning my characters to reality and preparing them to accept the moment of grace. Their heads are so hard almost nothing else will work.

Ouch. Even though I didn’t understand what hit me on that first O’Connor encounter (some of us have to be beaned by a book more than once), I kept reading her anyway. A few years after that road trip I became an adjunct English instructor at the college where I’d earned my degree and as it turned out, “Revelation” was among the texts I would be reading every year with my students. 

Like them, I laughed out loud when Mary Grace, the college girl reading Human Development in the doctor’s waiting room, cannot take one more “thank you Jesus!” from plump Mrs. Turpin and hurls the book right at her snarling, ““Go back to hell where you came from, you old wart hog!” Mrs. Turpin, who says earlier that she wishes she could “reduce,” is reduced in the best way possible by that vicious move. It deflates her pride and leads a to vision of her poverty in God’s eyes.

It dawned on me after one or two readings that I was Mrs. Turpin. After that, I read O’Connor more intensely, knowing I’d best accept the violent graces that come to me unbidden, revealing my own need to “reduce” my puffy pride.

So when I heard last fall that Ethan Hawke and his daughter Maya were working on a film about O’Connor (because they, too, love her) I couldn’t wait to see it. The film finally came to Denver’s Sie Theater and thanks to one of those now-grown sons of mine (and not before rereading all the stories I heard were shown on screen), I got to see it for myself. 

Wildcat was worth the wait.

Clearly borne of the father-daughter duo’s love for each other, for literature and especially for O’Connor herself, the film will please any Flannery fan. The script delighted me with its creative blend of biography (studded with quotes from O’Connor’s early prayer journal and later letters) and select story scenes.

The result is as smart and stinging as any Flannery fan would expect.

Maya Hawke evokes O’Connor beautifully, from that perfect period wardrobe to the slightly crooked tooth you see in most of those black and white photos of the writer. We see the young southerner nervously reading a story at the Iowa Writer’s Workshop in 1945, we hear her awkwardly defend the Eucharist at a dinner party, we see her lose at love and even lose hope for a New York based writing career when she is forced to return to her provincial Georgia hometown after being stricken with lupus, the disease that killed her father.

O’Connor learned about being “reduced” the hard way. She lived it little by little.

Fans familiar with O’Connor’s life will notice how the script alters and condenses her biography, but for me at least, the effect is more than fair. We feel her frustration that she wants to write a “new kind of novel” but to do so a mystery has to reveal itself in the process of working out the story; she can’t present a clean outline to her potential publisher.

She hammers away at her typewriter and suddenly we’re swept with her into her fiction as Maya Hawke becomes the protagonist with a perfect supporting cast. The story scenes (“The Comforts of Home,” “The Life You Save May Be Your Own,” “Good Country People,” “Parker’s Back,” “Revelation,”) might puzzle a viewer unfamiliar with O’Connor’s work, but for those who are, it’s a delight to see the characters on screen delivering plenty of familiar, laugh-out-lines.

But to make the tale of an introvert (however remarkable) work on screen, there must be a critical turn.

“It seems to me that all good stories are about conversion, about a character’s changing,” O’Connor once wrote to a friend.       

In Wildcat, the conversion comes as O’Connor confronts her frustration with the life lupus has imposed on her. It’s agonizing to see the pretty young woman holding an injection needle big enough for a horse, swallowing medication alone in her room and navigating the world on metal crutches. She did not ask for that.

“I have never been anywhere but sick,” she speaks in a voiceover (from The Habit of Being):

In a sense, sickness is a place, more instructive than a long trip to Europe, and it’s always a place where there’s no company, where nobody can follow. Sickness before death is a very appropriate thing and I think those who don’t have it miss one of God’s mercies.

This realization came to O’Connor slowly as she grappled with a faith she held completely but without much pious emotion. In Wildcat we even see her at Mass, looking as misfit as any young woman ever could beside her beaming, clueless mother, Regina (Laura Linney).

Wildcat culminates in an intimate scene revealing her inner vulnerability. “Have you come to give me extreme unction?” Flannery asks the priest (Liam Neeson) who comes to sit at her bedside.

“No, just a visit,” he gently replies. Longing for literary conversation, Flannery brings up James Joyce and the priest (as in “The Enduring Chill”) replies, “I don’t think I know him.” And then she lays it out. Her questions. Her longing to be a mystic but feeling as dull as “a cheese.”

“Give alms,” the priest advises (a nod to Gerard Manley Hopkins from one of Flannery’s letters).

All she has to offer is her stories.

“Is your writing honest? Is your conscience clear?” the priests asks. When she responds that it is, “Then the rest is God’s business,” he assures her.  He kisses his stole and invites her to make her confession, which, in good Catholic fashion, is not shown on screen.

But it produces, in the film at least, a resolve in the young writer to get to work. We know that Flannery wrote faithfully for three hours a day, which was as much as her diseased body would allow. Even when lupus completely sapped her strength before her death at age 39, O’Connor still wrote for two hours a day.

Lupus was O’Connor’s reality and she took what grace it offered. “The writer learns, perhaps more quickly than the reader,” she wrote, “to be humble in the face of what-is.” Flannery O’Connor’s life is as edgy and illuminating as her stories. Wildcat does justice to both of them.

The film’s final scene is beautiful as a peacock’s tail.
